Do Cold Case Endings seem Poorly Thought Out?

I've watched a few Cold Case episodes on TNT and it's like...everyone is getting along fine near the end and then all the sudden, someone gets taken out with a bat or there's a knife through someones face. The episodes as a whole seem pretty well thought out but some of the endings seem very underdeveloped to me. What do you think?
