IT People: Is this a waste, and would this annoy you?

I work in IT. My company is approving users to upgrade their monitors to 24" widescreens, which of course we are responsible for setting up. Now does it seem like a waste of money and are you annoyed by the fact that these users still want the 800x600 resolution on the new monitors and just want to see a little more but bigger and want the novelty of having a big flatscreen?
