It's unclear from your question if your wife is an American citizen or not. since you describe her as a newcomer, it sounds like she isn't. But, unless she is, she won't be able to file an IR-1 or K-3 petition for you. Even if she is, she'll need several thousand dollars to file the paperwork with immigration, pay for your immigrant visa, etc. Obviously, she'll need more, if she hires an attorney.
