Objectively, what is the point or purpose of pushing for a more socially conservative agenda in this country?

I honestly can't understand why Republicans appear steely in their insistence of holding down and pushing away trains of thought and the array of people and cultures that weave the diverse fabric of our society. I thought the dark ages were long gone.
